Flights
Flights depart Strahan waterfront then head on out to Ocean Beach and Hell's Gates, the entrance to Macquarie Harbour. We then fly down the western side of the harbour, passing Sarah Island, to the mouth of the Gordon River.
We follow the river passing Horseshoe Bend, (where the commercial cruise boats from Strahan turn around) and Lime Kiln Reach. At this point we leave the Gordon River and cross the Elliot Range into the valley of the Franklin River and follow the Franklin until it joins the Gordon River. The entire valley that we traverse was nearly flooded back in 1982 as a result of the controversial Gordon below Franklin dam
debate. Just below the junction of the Gordon and Franklin Rivers we point out the original dam site that is over 800 feet deep.
It is here that we begin our approach through the steep valleys of the Gordon River for a spectacular seaplane landing, approximately 35 kilometres upstream from the mouth. We have a pontoon here where we dock and passengers can take a short walk on an elevated boardwalk through the rain forest to Sir John Falls. View ancient rainforest and huon pines that can only be described as a photographer's paradise!
After 10 minutes we board the seaplane and follow the rest of the Gordon out to Lime Kiln Reach. Then it's out to Macquarie Harbour and up the eastern side to return to Strahan.
Operates daily from 31/Mar to 30/Jun each year approximately.
Operates daily on demand. Departure times 0900, 1030, 1200, 1530 and 1700. (The last flight time varies with daylight available). Duration of flights is approximately one hour and 20 minutes. Advance bookings are recommended. All flights are subject to weather and a minimum of three adult fares. Passenger weights are required at the time of booking.
